Engineer, Japan Agency for Marine Earth Science and Technology
Bio: My name is Shinichiro Umeda, and I am an Engineer at Japan Agency for Marine-Earth Science and Technology (JAMSTEC). I have lived at sea onboard Japanese Research Vessels more than 1,500 days in the past 14 years in the Western North Pacific. I have measured numerous samples/parameters to accurately quantify large-scale environmental changes such as global warming, progressive ocean acidification and its impact on marine ecosystems, and changes of the heat content of the ocean and the distribution of substances in seawater. In 2019/2020 we JAMSTEC will occupy the IO7S line, connecting to IO7N line. So it is especially important to complete this cruise in success.
What I’m doing on this cruise: I will collect many samples in this cruise, and some of them will be shipped to Japan for analysis. And it is my first time to board a foreign vessels, so I’m looking forward to experiencing such a precious opportunity.
